I am in Australia?s capital Canberra to address Members of Parliament, Ministers and Senators on why sport matters and is so important to both our nations, and to update them onpreparations for the London 2012 Games.
Australia has produced so many great sportsmen and women, and champion teams, who have inspired generations of young people in Australia and around the world, including my country and myself. In doing so, Australia, arguably more than any other nation, has illustrated the vital importance of having both mass community participation in sport and recreation, and constant international success across a wide range of sports.

I met Australia?s Prime Minister Julia Gillard earlier today, who is as passionate about sport as most Aussie PMs. Under direction from Federal Sports Minister, Mark Arbib, and IOC member John Coates, ringmaster of the Sydney 2000 Games, this sports-loving nation is gearing up for the Games in London next year.
It is always a pleasure to visit a country where sport means so much; where the national happiness index can be measured by the number of Olympic and Paralympic medals the country?s athletes are winning; and where even the green and gold bell frogs proudly wear the nation?s sporting colours.
