Track Workout with LA Running Club

It’s officially crunch time if you’re training for the Honda LA Marathon. You’re into your long runs of 16-22 miles, hard tempo runs, and, hopefully, some speed work. Let’s talk about that last part for a minute. You may have heard speed work variously described as “intervals,” “track workouts,” or “fartlek.” (That’s “speed play” in [...]

Over one million people applied for tickets to London?s 100m final

There's going to be about 960,000 disappointed people in London next Aug. 5.

Organizers for next year's Olympics received over one million applications for tickets to the track and field session that will include the 100-meter men's final and, presumably, world record holder Usain Bolt. Only 40,000 seats will be made available to the public for the evening session, ensuring that hundreds of thousands of applicants will be left without a seat when the ticket lottery winners are announced next month.

The opening and closing ceremonies plus all events in track, cycling, rhythmic gymnastics, triathlon, modern pentathlon and equestrian are already sold out. The swimming and tennis programs are nearing capacity as well. Though over 60 percent of applicants have paid for tickets, they don't yet know which events or sessions they have.

Chances are it won't be for track and field on the middle Sunday of the Games. The demand for tickets to see Bolt race the 100 outpaced supply by a factor of 25. It is thought to be the most requested ticket of the Games, surpassing the Opening Ceremony.

Over 1.8 million people sent 20 million applications for Olympic tickets. Organizers say 6.6 million tickets will be available to the general public. A sport-by-sport breakdown of the applications will be released next month.

Russia wants to send the Olympic flame into space

The newest space race is on. A top Russian official revealed on Wednesday that the nation is thinking about sending the 2014 Olympic flame to the International Space Station.

There are no immediate plans to lift the flame into space, but the deputy head of Russia's Federal Space Agency said it's an "interesting" concept that requires further study. He said his agency is open to the idea if Olympic officials express a desire to become the first nation ever to send the flame into orbit.

"It is not a bad idea," Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of Russia's Federal Space Agency, said.

He's right. It's not a bad idea, it's a really, really bad idea.

Putting the flame into space would be undeniably cool and would garner worldwide attention to the Olympic torch relay, which usually takes a terrestrial trek throughout the globe. The cost, logistics and possibility for catastrophic error far outweigh any novelty.

I mean, it's a fire in space. If something goes wrong it's not like the astronauts can open a window to let out the smoke or whip out their cell phones to call 911 (or 112 in Russia). Any device that would allow the flame to go into space would likely not expose an open flame to the spacecraft, but why even risk it?

There have been fires inside orbiting spacecraft before, most notably in 1997 when a fire caused by malfunctioning equipment burned for 90 seconds and exposed astronauts on the space station to heavy smoke for seven minutes.

Photos: London?s unusual basketball arena ready for Olympics

Beijing's famed Water Cube is now a massive water park opened to the public. Athens' beach volleyball complex was recently populated by gypsies. The Lake Placid athlete's village is a correctional facility.

During the Olympics, viewers across the world inevitably wonder, "What happens to these sparkling facilities once the Games leave town?" London won't have to worry about that question in regards to its 2012 basketball arena.

The structure, completed last week, is a temporary venue that will be torn down once the Games are complete. Organizers boast that it's one of the largest ever constructed at an Olympics. The 12,000-seat arena will be torn down following the Paralympic Games next summer and its materials will be used in other projects across Europe.

It may look like a bubble, like the one that collapsed over the Metrodome or ones that cover swimming pools and tennis courts in the winter, but the venue is actually made of 1,000 tons of steel framing surrounded by 20,000 square meters of stretchable PVC membrane. The seats at the stadium are painted orange and black to resemble a basketball. Much like the swimming facility in Beijing, the exterior of the building will be used as a canvas for light shows during the Games.

Men's preliminary basketball games will be held at the facility, in addition to the women's quarterfinals and all medal matches in handball. The rest of the men's basketball tournament will be held at the larger O2 Arena in London.

Jozef Wadecki, super tumbler and Internet sensation

A gymnastics video has been making the rounds of Jozef Wadecki, a Polish gymnast who is known for his explosive tumbling skills. How explosive? Take a look for yourself.

In his first tumbling run, Wadecki performs a front flip off of the springboard, followed by a whipback (a no-handed back handspring), back handspring, triple twist, whipback, back handspring, triple twist. He follows that up with a round-off right into a double layout, whipback, back handspring double layout, whipback, whipback, double back with a full twist. Phew. That sort of difficulty is unheard of.

Not only does he get unbelievable height, Wadecki has nearly perfect form. His legs are straight, toes are pointed, and he doesn't deviate from the center line down the middle of the tumbling mat.

*An earlier version of the post identified the tumbler as Leszek Blanik. We apologize for the error.

5 more days... video gear dilemma!

Thanks to some very generous donations (including a airfare!) we've raised enough to get to Houston and pay for the hotel. However, we're still short the funds ($400) to pay for the video gear needed to interview our Olympic hopefuls and film the USA Half Marathon Championships on 1/29. I'm departing on Thursday, 1/27 and may have do my shooting on a Flip video camera (not ideal, poor quality footage for a movie, and oh-so-embarrassing!) so anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated. The donate link is on the right side of this page :)

Sincerely,

Wendy

Munich bitter in 2018 Olympics loss

With a jubilant presentation headlined by figure skating champ Yu-Na Kim and Korean-American bronze medalist Toby Dawson as well as a strong and compact plan for the Games, Pyeongchang captured the bid for the 2018 Olympics. It was their third bid, and their experience helped them win.

Well, that's one way to look at it. If you're from Munich, the city that lost to Pyeongchang, you may see it slightly differently.

"We know that in sport winning is not everything and that defeat does not spell the end," said IOC Vice President Thomas Bach, a German who was one of Munich's bid leaders. "But obviously we are very disappointed. It seems that the sympathy effect for the Korean proposal played its role."

Yikes! The sympathy effect, Munich? That's not nice. Pyeongchang worked hard to overcome their last two losses. Their presentation was moving and focused on what the legacy of sport can do for a country. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Katarina Witt would understand that, right?

"At the moment I am at a loss for words," Witt told reporters. "Obviously we are bitterly disappointed but the decision seems to have been taken before our good presentation today and we could just not turn it around."

Ouch, Katarina. Look, it's awful to have your city lose out on the Olympics you've dreamed about for years. Trust me, I know this all too well. Even when every pundit in the world was saying that Chicago wouldn't get the Olympics because of the political problems between the USOC and the IOC and the IOC's wish to get an Olympics in South America, I held out hope that I'd get to see the Olympic flame burn on the shores of Lake Michigan. That means I was broken-hearted by the my city's humiliating defeat in the race for the 2016 Olympics.

But I got over it, and you will too, Katarina and Thomas and all the other good people of Munich. It helps to indulge in two of your country's best exports: beer and chocolate. Time eases the pain, as does a Stanley Cup championship. In a few years, you'll forget about the disappointment, pain and hole left in your heart from your city not winning the Olympics.

At least, that's what I've been told.

Friday's feast day

I trained twice on Friday and even though I was not as sharp as I would have liked, it was nice to be able to lift without severe DOMS. I did some hip mobility drills in the morning and for the first session I simply Back Squatted. I worked up to a single with 175kg and I failed. Very embarrassing. I followed this up with a double with the same weight and I got a nice little pb double in the Back Squat. My positioning felt rough, but I just needed to gut it out.

In the second session of the day, I lifted in the awesome gym, United Barbell, owned by Jenny Werba and her business partner. It is a Crossfit gym and it is fantastic! It has beautiful Eleiko weightlifting equipment and a nice platform. Max Aita was coaching a few of his lifters there and I was allowed join in. There was a really fun and intense atmosphere there with Kirsten, Joanne and Jenny kicking ass and taking names. I started off Snatching and worked up to a double with 100 and I failed the second rep with 105. I then did singles with 110 and 113 and I failed 115 and then Clarked it. I worked up to 128kg in the Power Clean and Jerk and I finished up with the Back Squat. I ended up hitting a double with 177kg and then I got a single with 182kg which felt great in regards to my form. We were rushing off, so I did not have time to finish off with a pb set of 5 which I know I would have hit.

Max was helping me out technically and there were a few points that he was making that hit the nail on the head. The important thing is that what Max was saying, was very similar to what Kelly Starret was telling from a completely different perspective when I saw him about my hip. I need to digest this more and I will write a full post on this also alongside my overall reflections and experiences from my trip.. Max said he would write a guest post for Weightlifting Epiphanies also, so that should be something to look forward to.

Here is an interview that I know will help an awful lot of people out there who are trying to set up their own weightlifting clubs and gyms. David Spitz owns California Strength and he wants to help you:

Oh Well, Sh*t Happens!

Heather was planning on running the Eugene Marathon on 5/1 but then she got sick and lost a few weeks of training, so she set her sights on the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon for her second Olympic Trials Qualifier on 5/15 (she'd previously attempted it in Chicago). Well, the morning before leaving for Green Bay, she learned that the forecast called for 30 mile per hour winds and being singularly focused on qualifying for the Trials, made the difficult and immediate decision to head to Cleveland to do the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon instead. I was just waking up and about to head out the door at 6:45 a.m. to catch a ride up to Green Bay with some other runners who were doing it when Heather called and spent the next several hours scrambling to book a hotel room in an already sold-out city (I managed to get what was possibly the last room available in the city and at a great rate, too) and reserved a spot on the Megabus from Chicago to Green Bay. Our Associate Producer of the Eugene segment, Jill Czarnik generously used her frequent flier miles and donated a one-way plane ticket to me so I could get there in time.

It was extremely foggy with very low visibility and the plane actually had to circle over Cleveland Airport for 20 minutes with the possibility of the pilot having to re-route to Pittsburgh or Columbus. Thankfully, it cleared enough for us to be able to land in Cleveland but over an hour behind schedule, so I didn't arrive in CLE until 1:00 a.m!

I found a taxi to my hotel (thank you to Henri at the Intercontinental Guest House for giving me the AAA discount even though I don't own a car!) and my head hit the pillow at 2:30 a.m.  2.5 hours later, I got my wake-up call at 5:00 a.m.  It's a miracle that I got there at all and I managed to get to the start line at the Cleveland Browns Stadium at 6:15, just in time to spot Heather behind a barricade wondering where she would store her gear bag since there was no Elite tent or gear check.

I ended up wearing Heather's backpack on top of my own and must have looked pretty strange, like the Hunchback of Notre Dame with two humps.

The Hunchback of Cleveland
The gun went off at 7:00 a.m. and I was jumping up and down, wishing the best for Heather. Without having had time to pre-plan for Cleveland, I found myself on an unfamiliar course searching for Mile 12, the only mile marker I could get to on foot ahead of Heather where I'd be able to get footage of her racing, then get back to the finish line before 9:46 a.m. (she needed to run 2:46 to get the Olympic Trials B Standard). Things were a bit confusing out on the course with both the 10K, half marathon and full marathon being run simultaneously and it was difficult to find the 12 Mile marker, or determine which runners were doing what race. I finally stopped and set up my camera at about 11.5 miles and waited anxiously for Heather who, if she was on her 6:20 min/mile pace, would arrive at around 8:15 a.m. Well, 8:15 came and went with no sign of Heather. At 8:29 a.m., I called her coach in Chicago, Bill Leach to let him know (since Heather was a late entry, she was not to be found on online runner tracking). He said something must be wrong, and my heart dropped.

The Female Lead Pack at Mile 11.5... but where's Heather?
I waited a few more minutes before reluctantly heading to the finish line. It had begun raining and I was drenched and worried about my camera. I kept wiping it off with a towel and put a plastic trash bag over it. When I got to Mile 13, I suddenly heard a woman call out my name. I looked and it was Maryclare McQuade, a runner from Virginia who had donated a plane ticket to me when I was trying to get to Houston in January to film the USA Half Marathon Championships and Houston Marathon! She recognized me while running the half marathon! She PR'd in the race and on her way back to her car after finishing, stopped for a quick interview. It was so awesome that she recognized me just from our Facebook page and let me know that we are indeed producing a film that people will be interested in seeing.

Maryclare McQuade
After interviewing Maryclare, I looked at my cellphone and noticed I had a message. It was from Heather. She gave me the unfortunate news that she was experiencing stomach issues and decided that if she'd made a pit-stop, she'd lose two minutes and with it, her OTQ. It wasn't worth putting 26.2 hard miles on her legs and not be able to qualify, and having to recover for weeks before attempting another marathon so she made the wise decision to stop at Mile 10. I called Heather back and we convened a few blocks from the finish line with her husband David and mom in tow. I did an on-the-spot interview with her about what had happened and when she began shivering, let her go back to her car and off to her hotel room to shower and rest.

"Oh well, shit happens!"
Before she headed off into the mist, Heather urged me to get to the finish line quickly to catch the two other women she'd been running with who also were attempting to run an Olympic Trials qualifying time. She was right... this film is about women who are trying to make it to the Trials but more importantly, to tell the stories of all women who have a dream. I managed to make it back in time to see last year's Cleveland Marathon winner Nicole Camp win again and realize her dream and punch her ticket to Houston with a 2:43:47 PR! Nicole and her parents graciously allowed me to interview them after the race.

Nicole Camp
We also met the lovely Jackie Pirtle-Hall of St. Charles, MO, another Trials contender who missed her OTQ by a mere 1 minute. A heart-breaker, to be sure but like Heather, Jackie plans to get it done!

Jackie Pirtle-Hall
And so even though our Heather didn't make it this time, our crazy 28 hour trip to Cleveland resulted in some wonderful (but wet) footage that will be compelling to watch! Heather is not done yet, though... she's ready to try again and will toe the line at Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota on June 18th. We hope that we can raise enough money through donations to our Film Fund to rent our video gear and cover our travel costs to see Heather fulfill her dream! If you'd like to help us out, please click on the Donate button on the upper-right hand side of this blog.

(p.s. A huge thank you Beth Salinger of Endurance Marketing who granted me a last-minute media credential and Coach Jenny Hadfield who delivered it to my hotel. Also kudos to Dick Pond/Fast Track Racing's Marvin Banal and Tim Hamilton for giving me a ride back to Chicago after their races. We all returned home tired but happy!)

Lance Armstrong?s awkward encounter with Tyler Hamilton

Lance Armstrong and Tyler Hamilton had an awkward, unexpected run-in at an Aspen restaurant this weekend, according to The Outside Blog. It was the first time the former friends and teammates had seen each other since Hamilton went on "60 Minutes" and accused Armstrong of doping during his celebrated cycling career.

Outside Online details the encounter:

[Saturday] night, Hamilton went to dinner with friends at Cache Cache [pronounced cash cash], an ItalianFrench restaurant that also happens to be one of Armstrong's favorite Aspen hangouts. (Armstrong has a home here, but Hamilton thought the seven-time Tour de France winner was out of town.) During dinner, Hamilton left his table to go to the bathroom. As he walked out of the bathroom, an arm blocked his path. It was Armstrong. The two hadn't spoken since Hamilton's 60 Minutes appearance.

"He wanted to get into it," Hamilton told me this morning. "I was like, 'Let's step outside and talk away from the crowd, but he wouldn't. He said, 'No one cares.'" Then, according to Hamilton, Armstrong began to berate him.

(Armstrong's version of the encounter is a bit more tame: "I said, 'Hey, what's up?'" he says. "It was certainly awkward for both of us. It was truly uneventful.")

The blog reports that the owner of the restaurant, a good friend of Armstrong's, told Hamilton he could finish his meal but wasn't welcome backat the restaurant. The cyclist said he was "rattled" by the incident.

So, to sum up, Hamilton narcs on Armstrong on national television, hasn't spoken to him since then, goes to a city in which he lives, eats at one of his main hangouts and then is surprised when he runs into him and there's a minor confrontation? Bro, I amicably broke up with a girl 10 years ago and still dodge the coffee shop she used to frequent. And she moved out of the state in 2006! If you don't want to run into Lance, avoid the places you know he'll be. If you don't heed that advice, understand that it's going to lead to some conflict.

From ?Back the Bid? model to world swimming silver medallist

It seems like only yesterday, but six years ago I was part of the marketing team responsible for the 'Back the Bid campaign' that would help build support across the UK and show the International Olympic Committee how much we wanted to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Our poster campaign was all about incredible sport in the heart of this wonderful city and, in keeping with our promise to use the power of the Games to inspire young people to choose sport, we used up and coming talented athletes as models.

Figure skater completes routine after broken nose

Canadian figure skater Eric Radford came away from his short program performance at skating's world championships with partner Megan Duhamel with more than a seventh-place finish. He also ended up with a broken nose.

Radford threw a spinning Duhamel in the air, but as she came down and Radford prepared to catch her, she came in too close. Still rotating, she popped Radford in the nose with her elbow. A cut instantly opened, and Radford's nose was broken.

The amazing part is that they continued their routine without any trouble, coming just a little more than a point away from their season's best score. Their 58.83 earned them a seventh-place finish in the short program, and they will skate for the championship on Friday. Radford was nonchalant after the program.

"I could see, I could breathe, I'm not dying, I'll finish the program and deal with it after," Radford said after getting his nose reset by the team doctor.

His partner was not as calm.

"I thought, 'Oh my God, what if he loses a tooth,' That's what was going through my head ... Every time I looked at him the blood got worse and worse and worse, all over his face," she said.

If figure skating doesn't work out for him, perhaps Radford can find a spot with the Vancouver Canucks, and Duhamel can use those elbows to follow in the footsteps of UFC fighter and fellow Canadian Georges St-Pierre.

2010 Olympic gold medalists Qing Pang and Jian Tong from China are in first place, followed by Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, and Russia's Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov. American Caitlin Yankowskas and John Couglin are in eighth, and Amanda Evora and Mark Ladwig are in 11th. Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, Canada's other team, is in 10th.

?I don?t know who she is!? The tale of Waitz?s first NYC Marathon win

Grete Waitz didn't even know she was running her first marathon until a few days before she stepped to the starting line at the 1978 New York City Marathon. The diminutive Norwegian runner, who held the world record in the 3,000 meters, was a late entry into the race and had never competed in a race longer than 10 miles.

She went on to win and then duplicated the feat eight more times throughout her career, making her the most decorated female runner ever to compete in the famed road race. The former physical education teacher set the world record numerous times in the event and also won the silver medal at the 1984 Olympics.

Waitz died on Tuesday at the age of 57. She had been battling cancer for six years. Read her obituary here.

The story of Waitz's first time in New York is a classic tale in running circles. From the Oct. 23, 1978 edition of The Washington Post:

Because of her late decision, Waitz was given number 1173 and was not even listed in the official program - the startled public address announcer at the finish line said, "No. 1173 has overtaken Martha Cooksey for the women's lead at 20 miles, but I don't know who she is" - but her time bettered by 2:17.7 the previous women's record of 2:34:47.5 set earlier this year by Christa Vahlensieck of West Germany.

Waitz, who arrived only Thursday for her first visit to the United States, was asked if she could run faster.

"It is difficult to say. I don't really know the distance. I haven't trained for it. I have been running only 17 to 19 miles a day," replied the cheerful Norsewoman. "I just wanted to try running a marathon because so many girls are doing that here. Only a few in Norway, but I read so much about the marathon in the Track and Field News."

In her first time ever running the race, Waitz broke a record by over two minutes, all because she had been reading about it in a magazine. Given her later history in the event, it must have been a really good article.

Olympic hopeful rescued on Miami beach after being buried in sand

A member of the Austrian national swim team had to be rescued on a Miami beach after a sand hole he dug collapsed, burying him up to his neck.

Jakub Maly, 19, reportedly spent most of his day at Pompano Beach digging a hole seven-feet deep. When he jumped in as a joke, the sand hole collapsed around him. It took 60 rescuers more than two hours to free the Olympic hopeful.

A fire and rescue spokesman said the biggest danger was in Maly being crushed internally by the sand. He was alert as rescuers slowly stabilized the hole and ensured that any potential collapse wouldn't bury his head. When Maly was freed, he was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Various news reports incorrectly referred to Maly as an Olympic swimmer. Though he has yet to qualify for a Summer Games, the young swimmer could represent Austria in next year's London Olympics. Last year, Maly finished 14th in the European Short Course Championships in the 200 medley.

Chasing the Gold Rush Around Beijing

As the rain poured down in Beijing on Thursday it seemed like a good opportunity to stay in and catch up on some blogging ? unfortunately Bob?s internet connection disagreed, and would not allow this post. Trying again now, on Friday. It has been difficult to fit in posts, around ticket-hunting, sport-watching, exploring Beijing and [...]

Chan and his quad in lead after short program at Worlds

After a record-breaking performance in the short program, Canada's Patrick Chan is in the lead of the men's World Figure Skating Championships, more than 11 points ahead of Japan's Nobunari Oda, Chan's closest competitor. Chan's performance garnered a 93.02, smashing the 91.3 held by Russian Evgeni Plushenko, who looked on as Chan dazzled the crowd in Russia with a quadruple-jump combination.

Japanese skater Daisuke Takahashi is in third place, followed by Arthur Gachinski (Russia) and Florent Amodio (France). Americans Richard Dornbush, Ryan Bradley and Ross Miner are in 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.

Chan hit the quadruple toe-triple toe combination early in his program, an instant boost to his confidence. His next jumps, a triple Axel and a triple flip, were easy after he had completed the quad.

In previous years, skaters weren't willing to try quadruple jumps because there wasn't enough of a upside to the risk. Now, the rules have been tweaked to reward a skater for trying the quad. Chan had struggled with the jump until he made a small tweak in practice. Now, he's so at ease with it that he plans to do two quad jumps in the free program, despite his comfortable lead.

His energetic skate drew loud cheers from the crowd in Moscow, who filled the lower bowl of the stadium despite the last-minute notice. Moscow agreed to host worlds after the event, planned for Tokyo in late March, had to be postponed and moved because of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.

Several Japanese fans were on-hand to both cheer on Oda and Takahashi and say thank you for the support. They held up signs reading, "We're hanging in there," and "Thank you, world" as their skaters took the ice, but none of skaters lived up to Chan. Oda stepped out of his quad attempt, and Takahashi didn't attempt the jump.

Chan will now try to take home the championship on Friday. With a dynamite program and a big lead, it's his to lose.

London?s Olympic ticketing headache

If having too much demand for Olympics tickets is the biggest problem encountered by the London 2012 organizing committee, next year's Summer Games will run smoothly as the Thames at dawn.

For now, complaints about the ticketing procedures have become the first controversy of the Olympics with some disgruntled citizens complaining that the application process was unfair and others saying they feel detached from the Games because they won't be able to attend.

Nearly 7 million tickets to 645 sessions were available for sale at the start of the spring. Throughout March and April, over 1.8 million people sent in more than 20 million applications for tickets, each for a specific date and session. A random lottery was then conducted and 700,000 applicants automatically had their tickets purchased.

The gap between total applications and successful bids stemmed from a high demand for marquee events. There were approximately 40,000 tickets on sale to the public for both the Opening Ceremony and men's 100-meter final. Combined, those two sessions received3 million requests. Overall, organizers say that 50 percent of sessions were oversubscribed -- a remarkable figure given that sessions like team dressage and handball preliminary matches have traditionally seen low Olympic turnout.

Winners were unaware they had received tickets until their credit cards were automatically billed following the lottery. Even then they didn't know which tickets they had won. They were eventually told via email but still don't know the location of their seats and won't until the end of this year.

The biggest complaints from ticket holders centered around these credit card guarantees. Every application required a credit card that would be charged in the event that it was selected. This put applicants in a difficult spot. Even knowing that there were safeguards in place to ensure that individuals didn't end up with thousands of dollars worth of seats, how much would they be willing to risk? If you want $500 worth of tickets, do you apply only for that $500 and run the risk of getting nothing? Or do you press your luck and apply for $5,000 in tickets, based on the assumption that more applications gives you a better chance of getting tickets to something?

Most people went for the latter method. London's Telegraph newspaper theorized Brits were successful in 10 percent of their ticket requests. A small group had received up to 40 percent, though.

This led to an interesting dichotomy: some people complaining that they had received too many tickets and others insisting they hadn't received any. Even the mayor of London joined in on the catcalls. "I think it is a bit peculiar that that is the way around," Boris Johnson told reporters this spring. "It is an administrative oddity but we all understood that when we signed up online that this was the deal and we would be prepared to pay these amounts. I do not think it is particularly heinous."

Others are upset that they don't have anything at all. More than 1.2 million applicants received no tickets and were initially left in the dark about the opportunity to participate in a second-chance lottery. That process began June 24 and drew 150,000 applicants. From those, 90 percent received tickets, mostly to soccer or basketball preliminary games.

Though it's of little consolation to those who missed out on seeing Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, there are a number of ways around not having a ticket. The marathons, triathlons and cycling's road races are among the events that spectators can watch for free. Ticketed areas sit at the beginning and end of the races but in between there are ample opportunities to watch the competitions, including one plumb spot near Buckingham Palace that affords a great view of the men's and women's triathlons.

If tickets don't help Londoners gain access to the Games, volunteering could. Officials are looking for up to 70,000 people for various roles, including greeters, cleaners and hospitality. Though there's bound to be some more disappointment ? 100,000 have signed up for the interviews ? LOCOG head Sebastian Coe said that between volunteers to perform at the Opening Ceremony, the torch relay and a special city ambassador program, there will still be a number of opportunities to assist at the Games.

Ironically, the nation's biggest sport is having the most trouble filling seats. Over 75 percent of the 2 million available soccer tickets remain unsold. The uncertainty over the makeup of the British team (players from all United Kingdom nations will join together) and the Olympics' under-23 rule for the men's tournament are partially to blame. It doesn't help that the early round soccer games are played all over the country, not centralized in London. Since those will be easier tickets to score, the early demand wasn't there. Over time, organizers expect to fill soccer venues, particularly if David Beckham is awarded one of the three overage spots on the team.

Saturday's seasoning

I took a break from life in general for a week and did not train for 8 days. Wednesday was my first session back, so I trained then, Thursday and today. I had a great break and it was a novelty waking up and actually feeling refreshed and ready to go. While I was away I did two short sessions with some hill sprints and I did yoga four or five times which kept me feeling relatively loose. All in all, I felt fantastic on Wednesday.

The slight issue with all this, of course, is that I have the Senior National Championships this day week. This means that I need to find the delicate balance of being competition sharp with the lifts, with being rested and strong. This week's training was very important in order to find that balance.

In training on Wednesday, my body was practically asleep and this session was more of a tune up for Thursday and Saturday. I ended up Snatching up to 105kg in an extremely shoddy manner. I missed the return leg with the weight. Embarrassing, yes; but my system was not exactly firing on all cylinders and my back was as stiff as a board because my flight home was delayed the previous day and I spent an awful lot of time in the airport and on a plane. Wayne had me Power Clean and Jerk instead of full Clean because my legs were still asleep and I enjoyed them. I ended up with 117.5kg and brought 120 to parallel so it was a no man's land Clean. Embarrassing again, but understandable. I also Front Squatted 150 for a double and then two singles which felt good.

The following day I trained in Morton Stadium in Santry with Shane McQuillan, Sami, Byrdie, Killer and Cedric Unholz, who came over for a few days to train. Cedric is a strength and conditioning coach based in Edinburgh and took up weightlifting in February. It was nice training with someone who is a knowledgeable coach in their own right . It was also nice training in a different environment and everyone enjoyed it. I had spent the day in the sun showing Cedric around Dublin and neither of us were in good nick to train really. My back was very stiff, but I ended up Snatching 111kg despite it. My positioning was awful because I was so tight and stiff, but I just got on with it and focused more on finishing the pull. As you will see in the video below, there was a while lot of pulling with the arms, but c'est la vie. You just have to get on with it.

I then Clean and Jerked up to 132 and missed the Clean with 137. Annoying, but again, you have to accept it. My lifting was feeling very out of sync in both the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk. I then Back Squatted regularly for the first time in many months. I hit a very easy 160 and missed 170 which was very surprising. I lost my position on the way down and I will attribute that a stiff and tight back. Hopefully that is all it is. Hopefully...

I then trained today and I felt pretty tired with a hectic last few days. Cedric had treated my back the previous evening and he really knows his stuff; he is qualified in KMI treatment. I Snatched up to 100kg but I was feeling off, so I went back down and worked up in a second wave, hitting 108 and then missed 112 very narrowly twice. I was going to do a third wave and went up to 90, but I left it there because I was feeling pretty rough. I Clean and Jerked then and the rot continued. I actually missed a Clean with 127 and 130 which was bizarre. Oleg was there and he gave me the required slap around and I then hit 134, 136 and then 140 which is shown below. This showed me again how weightlifting can expose a weak mind, so thankfully Oleg was able to help me snap out of it.

I finished up with some Front Squats and worked up to an easy 150 and inexplicably missed 160 despite getting past the sticking point. I went back down to 150 again and then 158, but missed that too. Frustrating, yes it most certainly is. I have to get on with it an keep squatting I suppose. As I said earlier, I have Nationals this day week and I will train twice. Wayne will let me know what I need to do and I will make sure that I recover as much as I can and that I am nice and loose. Cedric lifted well and we really worked on his overhead position in the Snatch and turning a passive catch into an active one. He is a good athlete and I know he will progress well.
